KATHMANDU, NEPAL — Three students died and 40 others sustained injuries when a school bus crashed in Sankhu, Kathmandu, on Wednesday afternoon. The bus, operated by Sundarimai Yatayat (Ba 2 Kha 7958), lost control due to brake failure on the Sankhu-Nagarkot road in Kattike, according to Kathmandu Police.
The vehicle was transporting students from SS Academy in Chabahil back to Kathmandu after a picnic in Nagarkot. The accident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. in Shankharapur Municipality-5.
Kathmandu Police Spokesperson SP Apilraj Bohara confirmed the fatalities: one student, Sushanka Dotel, died at Shankharapur Hospital, while two others succumbed to injuries at NMC Hospital and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH). The identities of the latter two victims have not yet been disclosed.
Of the 40 injured, several remain in critical condition across multiple hospitals, authorities reported. Rescue teams and local authorities responded swiftly to the scene, transporting victims for medical care.
Police stated an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the brake failure. Sundarimai Yatayat, the bus operator, has not issued a public statement.
School officials at SS Academy declined to comment pending further details from law enforcement.
