Five Nepali nationals, including four men and one woman, were rescued by the Nepali Embassy in Thailand, with the help of the Thai government. They were caught up in an online scam operation in Myanmar. The rescued individuals returned to Nepal on Thursday, after being freed from Myanmar’s Myawaddy region. The group was brought back through the Tak border checkpoint in Thailand.
The embassy is now telling everyone to stick to the government’s rules when it comes to working abroad. They’re stressing how crucial it is to get the right work permits and not fall for those too good to be true job offers, especially in places like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand where the risk of getting exploited is super high.
This whole thing comes after the government put out a fresh travel warning last December. They’re saying there’s been a rise in human trafficking and fake job schemes targeting Nepali people in these countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) even doubled down on the warning, telling folks to be extra careful and not get tricked by promises of big money jobs overseas. This was all because of recent cases where Nepalis were trafficked to Southeast Asia, especially Myanmar’s Kayin province, and forced into illegal work under really tough conditions.
