Mayor Balen Shah has expressed his views on social media in response to US President Donald Trump’s comments about fraud in US aid to Nepal.

In his post, Mayor Shah thanked Trump for making Nepali citizens realize the value of their own country. He suggested that while Nepal struggles due to its people leaving in search of better opportunities, the US faces challenges because its citizens do not contribute enough to their country’s development.

Shah stated, “Dear Donald J. Trump, thank you for making us realize our country is better than yours. We are poor because our people are leaving. You are poor because your people cannot build your own country. You rely on the rest of the world.”

Additionally, he criticized the US Diversity Visa (DV) program, calling it a form of “slavery” that draws Nepal’s talented individuals abroad. He said that the program should be banned and argued Nepal should keep its skilled people for the growth of the nation.

Shah’s words has caused a lot of conversation, people debating about migration trends of Nepal and effects of foreign aids. The value of programs like DV lottery has been questioned by many, if it’s actually help Nepal or maybe hurting the country's future.
