KATHMANDU: Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, the first President of Nepal, emphasized that the historic revolution of 2007 BS (1950/51 AD) laid the foundation for the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Nepalis today. His remarks came during an interview with the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) on Monday, marking National Democracy Day.

Yadav described Fagun 7 (February 19 this year) as a “milestone” in Nepal’s political history, urging citizens to celebrate the day with pride. “This day liberated the people through their struggle for rights,” he said, recalling the revolution that ended the autocratic Rana regime and initiated democratic reforms.

He highlighted that Nepal’s current federal republic system, inclusiveness, proportional representation, and secular democracy stem from the transformative changes of 2007 BS. “These achievements must be safeguarded and integrated to ensure justice and equal access to political, economic, and social rights for all,” Yadav stressed.

The former President called for unity in addressing ongoing challenges, emphasizing the need to streamline efforts to fulfill public aspirations. His remarks underscored the importance of preserving Nepal’s hard-won democratic progress while advancing equitable development.

National Democracy Day commemorates the establishment of democracy in 1951, following the 2007 BS revolution.
