Sunsari, Nepal: A bird flu has been found in ward 6 of Koshi Rural Municipality, Sunsari. The Central Veterinary Lab confirmed the A(H5N1) virus in dead birds after testing samples. This marks Nepal’s first bird flu case of 2025.
Authorities acted fast. A total of 447 fowls, ducks, pigeons, chickens were culled to stop the virus from spreading. They also destroyed 10 kg of feed and manure. The farm got disinfected, and a 200 meter area around it was sealed off.
Officials have been told to increase surveillance, taking samples from dead birds for testing. Dr. Sudhir Kumar Singh from the Department of Livestock Services said migratory birds coming to Nepal during winter may have brought the virus.
Bird flu can affect birds and sometimes even humans. Nepal has seen repeated outbreaks since 2009. A 21 year old man in Kavrepalanchok died from the H5N1 virus in 2019 after working with poultry.
Experts advise poultry workers to be careful. Using gloves and mask while handling birds is recommended. There’s also worry that sick poultry might end up in market, as farmers may want to cut their losses. Authorities are being urged to help affected farmers by providing compensation.
Nepal will be reporting the outbreak to the World Organisation for Animal Health. In the meantime, officials watching closely to make sure virus don’t spread more.
